Mustangs Win Silver In Brampton!
Upper Maitland took part in the 24th Brampton Cougars Friendship Tournament this past weekend in Vaughan. Being an 8-team/2 pool format, the girls went 2-1 in pool play and outscored their opponents 17-5 over the course of the 5-game tournament.
In Friday's 1st game, Upper Maitland faced Toronto Leaside in what would turn out to be a preview of the eventual final on Sunday afternoon. The Mustangs fell 3-1 in the opener to the eventual champs. The girls then cruised past Mississauga 7-0 in the 2nd game Friday night which would set-up an essential must win, 3rd game against AHFVG from Gatineau on the Saturday afternoon. That game ended in a game-winning, buzzer beater that had everyone on their feet in the stands! The 2-1 victory gave the girls a berth into the Semi Finals on Sunday morning.
Upper Maitland dominated in the Semi Final game, defeating the Sudbury Yeti's 7-0 to advance to the gold medal game at 4 pm. Unfortunately, fatigue set in and the final remained scoreless for most of the game. In the end, Toronto Leaside netted a late goal and the Mustangs had to settle for silver in a 1-0 loss.
The girls had a lot of fun at the hotel, and made some friends along the way! Once again their strong defense; excellent goaltending; & timely scoring led them to another great tournament showing.
The Mustangs have only 4 regular season games remaining before their playoff year end tournament. They currently sit atop the standings with a game in hand over Huron-Bruce and look to finish the year strong! Keep up the great work girls, your coaches were very proud of the way you played this weekend!
